I was the Government Minister in charge at a Westminster Hall debate entitled “Implications for the Scottish Devolution Settlement of Triggering Article 50”.
Devolution and the creation of devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all occurred whilst we were members of the European Union and therefore some Scottish MPs and MSPs (Member of Scottish Parliament) were concerned about how triggering Article 50 would affect the current devolution settlements.
In my speech I made it clear that triggering Article 50 is a matter of process and the UK Government is determined to represent the interests of all nations within our precious United Kingdom. To that end, we have been and will be in constant communication with the Scottish Government, and also of course with the Welsh and Northern Irish administrations, to ensure that we negotiate the best deal possible for the whole country.
I always enjoy representing Her Majesty’s Government in debates and I look forward to participating in more in the future.
