On a Saturday morning in the last fortnight I attended a popular event in the Northampton Guildhall celebrating International Women’s Day.
The event had information stalls, entertainment and also hosted 22 organisations that work supporting women – including Women’s Aid and Northampton Inter Faith Forum – in order to inform attendees about the work currently being done in Northampton and around the country on gender equality.
International Women’s Day, which this year falls on Wednesday, 8th March 2017 is designed to help promote gender equality around the world by showcasing the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. I am a great supporter of gender equality and I feel it is important that we do celebrate the achievements of women– to ensure that young people are encouraged to be self-confident and ambitious. The Day also aims to bring to the forefront many issues which only apply to women. I also attended International Men’s Day in Northampton recently
I am proud to say that the UK is a global leader on gender equality, and we are proud that we now have the highest ever level of female employment and the lowest ever gender pay gap. Nevertheless the Government still recognises that there is a lot more to be done, and this of course is an area our second-ever female Prime Minister Theresa May MP feels strongly about.
