I attended the ‘Young Leaders’ meeting in Northampton recently, on a Friday evening at County Hall, and met young leaders and their parents from across our county.
‘Young Leaders’ is a scheme run by Northamptonshire County Council to get young people involved in the community and give them a voice through elected representatives of their own age. These young people stand for elections and campaign around schools to win votes. They have had the opportunity to visit Parliament and have even gone to Brussels to see the work of the European Parliament.
I was very impressed by my meeting with these proactive youngsters, and I look forward to hearing about the work they do over the coming years. It was also quite clear they were very fond of Councillor Joan Kirkbride who is responsible for the scheme in Northamptonshire and she clearly has had a powerful impact on its success.
