On Saturday, 14th October I joined hundreds of people in Northampton town centre for what I think must be the tenth occasion I have celebrated the Hindu festival of Diwali. Many residents joined the highly colourful and musical parade around town again this year.
Diwali is a significant festival in the Hindu calendar – which is also celebrated by Sikhs and Jains – to celebrate the success of light over darkness and of good over evil. Diwali is also known as the “Festival of Lights” as the victory of good over evil is symbolised by the lighting of many lights. The event itself, held in the Market Square, is always a great pleasure to attend – and it is encouraging to note that it only seems to get more popular!
I enjoy celebrating how culturally diverse our society is here in Northampton and events such as this one allow people to come together to celebrate the similarities that we share.
