Northampton Borough Council (NBC) organised Heritage Open Days between Thursday, 7th September and Sunday, 10th September.
Every year in September some 40,000 volunteers across England organise 5,000 events to celebrate this country’s fantastic history and culture. This year, many events were held in Northampton to mark our heritage.
One of my visits that weekend was going to see the fascinating National Leather Collection, located in Grosvenor Chambers, next door to the Market Square entrance of the Grosvenor Centre, and well worth a visit. Access is free.
The National Leather Collection – founded in London but now based here in Northampton, is one of the biggest collections of leather in the world and sports a wide range of items ranging from morocco leather-bound books to leather weaponry, from ancient leather packing cases once used by Royals, to gloves and shoes centuries old.
Northampton’s leather craftsmanship is steeped in centuries of history and this collection truly is a gem in our town.
