The EU Referendum is on the 23rd of June – this is a hugely important political event for this country, and that very much includes the young generation of voters with their whole lives ahead of them.
The last time Britain voted on membership of the EU was in 1975 – over 40 years ago, meaning that people who then voted aged 18 are now 59! This demonstrates that the results of referendums can last for a very long time – and that the results therefore matter hugely to young people.
I am very keen to get young people interested in and involved in politics, and this is something I have tried to do throughout my time as an MP. I have visited many schools before to talk to pupils about my work, and with the EU Referendum coming up I was recently invited to travel just outside my constituency to go to Sponne School in Towcester to talk to Sixth Form leavers there about the EU referendum and why I believe the best result for this country would be a vote to Remain. They had previously heard from a politician with the Leave viewpoint.
It is clear that these young people had a lot of interest in the subject and were keen to learn more about it, and I enjoyed taking questions on this subject.
I am visiting several Northampton schools before the big day to talk about the Referendum, and my opinion that it is important to Remain in the EU.
Whatever your view of the Referendum debate- it is David Cameron as Prime Minister who has given the British people the chance to decide their future for the first time in many years.
