Last week, I met with a number of local businesses in Northampton in a cross party meeting to hear their opinions on the forthcoming EU Referendum.
On 23rd June, the people of Britain will get the chance to vote on the future of the UK. It is such a long time since the UK joined the then European Economic Community in 1975 that nobody under the age of 59 has previously been able to vote on our membership. This is the first time in 41 years that the British people will get a say on Britain’s place in the EU.
The referendum is being held thanks to the Prime Minister, who believes that the British people should get a say on this issue – and a referendum was promised in the Conservative election manifesto. That promise is now being delivered, and voters will have a chance to vote on this important decision on 23rd June.
I believe it is in the economic and national security interests of the UK to Remain in the EU. At a time when world economic stability is still unsteady, with increasing expansionism from Russia under Putin, and where we face severe threats from global terrorists like Daesh, it is noticeable that people at the top of industry and government consider our interests in these areas are best served by Remaining in the EU. I still feel that ongoing reform of the European Union is very necessary.
