I was pleased to be invited recently to sit down for a coffee with members from Northampton’s Deaf community at one of their monthly coffee gatherings.
‘Northampton Deaf Coffee’ is a regular event setup by a Northampton resident which brings together deaf people from across the town. It is a social gathering which allows people from the deaf community to meet and discuss an array of things. The meetups are also a great way for BSL (British Sign Language) users to teach other deaf people this valuable communication skill.
I was approached by the organiser of the event and asked to attend one of the meetings in an effort to help the deaf community in Northampton better understand politics. I was told by the organiser that unfortunately, some communication barriers make it difficult to follow politics and I was more than happy to help.
I enjoyed discussing politics with members of the Northampton deaf community. Several years ago I took a few British Sign Language lessons and I would like to continue these in the future. I was pleased to have supported such a wonderful community group and I commend the organiser for setting up this group.
