In the past fortnight, the House of Commons held a vote to have a straight In/Out Referendum on our relationship with the European Union.
A Referendum in 2017 would give people a say on whether they want to be In the EU or Out of it.
A vote by Conservative MP’s on this subject earlier this year was blocked in the House of Lords by the other political parties. The vote in the past two weeks was therefore a second attempt to get it through.
Anybody not 18 years of age or older in 1975 has never had their say on the Union with Europe. In my opinion, it is high time that the British public gets to debate and decide on our relationship with Brussels.
I voted in favour of the Bill and think everybody in Northampton, and indeed the country, should have their say on this most important of subjects which affects all of us in our everyday lives.
I know where I stand on giving people their say on Europe through a referendum, but the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties are opposed to a Referendum and it remains to be seen how they will vote on this in the coming months.
