In my role as Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism I recently visited the Horniman Museum and Gardens in South London. The Museum, commissioned in 1898 and opened in 1901, is home to a huge variety of extraordinary objects including collections of anthology and musical instruments. I think it is a particularly good museum for children to visit.
The Museum is particularly well-known for its large collection of animals, such as the famous Walrus you can see in the photo! The walrus has been on display at the Museum for over a century and is thought to have come from eastern Canada. The Museum also has a delightful butterfly house.
The Horniman Museum is one of 15 national museums that, as the Arts Minister, I have responsibility for and I am keen to help the museum sector as much as I can. Museums in this country have a wide range of impressive collections from all over the world because of the care and dedication we put into preserving these wonderful artefacts.
