When people have committed criminal offences and been convicted in court, they will sometimes receive a sentence to do ‘unpaid work’ in the community. This used to be called Community Service and is now called the Community Payback scheme.
In the last fortnight, in my capacity as one of the Law Officers of the Crown, I visited the charity ‘Standing Together’ which works to protect the thousands of women and men who are subjected to violence at home.
On Monday, 12th August I took part in a crucial cross-organisation meeting in No 10 Downing Street, chaired by the Prime Minister, to discuss how the criminal justice system can work better to deter and prevent crime.
Since I became an MP over 9 years ago, and the three and a half years before that when I was the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North, I have always been eager to speak to all of my constituents and hear their views and concerns.
I always enjoy visiting schools in Northampton North and over the past ten years I have done so dozens of times. I very much admire the teaching profession and take the view that a good education is a precious right for everyone.
Just nine weeks after I was promoted to the rank of Minister of State by the then Prime Minister Theresa May, and appointed as Minister of State for Transport I was, on 26th July, promoted once again by the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the position of Solicitor General for England and Wale
