Last Thursday, Age UK celebrated Older People’s Day, and I was very pleased to attend the celebrations at Emmanuel Church at Weston Favell Centre, alongside Age UK Northamptonshire’s CEO Liam Condron as well as many representatives of Age UK and dozens of visitors.
A whole range of activities were laid on, including Boccia, New Age Kurling and exercise classes, and I had the chance to meet and speak with many older members of the local community.
Age UK is a nationwide charity providing helpful advice and assistance to older people, from financial advice and promoting independence to offering health counselling and preventing loneliness. This was an excellent chance to celebrate older people, who have contributed so much to our local community as well as our country, for many years.
Many older people suffer from loneliness and ill health. Social activities and exercise classes are a fantastic way to improve older people’s health and wellbeing: it was a pleasure to join Age UK and see first-hand the great work they do organising these activities, and also to meet those older people taking part.
