In Prime Minister Theresa May’s reorganization of Government in the hours after her appointment as Prime Minister I was thrilled and honoured to have been asked to join the Government as Deputy Leader of the House of Commons.
Since the General Election in May 2015 I have served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Mrs May in her role as Home Secretary. My new duties as Deputy Leader involve helping to ensure the Government’s legislation is ready and in good order to progress through the various legislative stages in the Commons and also to be a representative for all the backbenchers in the House, from whatever party.
In this role, I will co-ordinate and supervise business in the house, and represent backbench MPs to the best of my abilities. This aspect of the job often involves cross-party co-operation, and I will be helping to ensure that backbench MPs from all parties have the chance to raise issues from their constituencies in Parliament.
Of course, while taking on these additional duties, I will continue to serve Northampton North with the same workload and same dedication that I have done for the last six years.
